3 Ways to Make a Manuka Honey Hair Mask

Did you know that you can also use Manuka honey on your hair?

If you, like us, have been sold on using Manuka honey as part of your daily skincare routine, congratulations. But while it’s been proven to be useful for our face and, in general, skin, did you know that you can also use Manuka honey on your hair?

Yes. It’s true. Manuka honey makes for an excellent natural DIY hair mask that you can make at home.

Known as one of the best Manuka honey varieties available, this golden elixir can transform dull and lifeless hair into smooth and vibrant.

What Makes Manuka Honey Special for Hair Care?

Manuka honey stands out from other types of honey due to its unique properties. The key to its effectiveness lies in its high concentration of methylglyoxal (MGO), a compound that gives Manuka honey its potent antibacterial and healing properties. When looking for Manuka honey for hair care, pay attention to the Manuka honey MGO rating – the higher the rating, the more potent the honey.

Manuka honey is a natural humectant, which means that it can attract and retain moisture. Because it traps moisture in the hair, using this New Zealand honey regularly as a mask can help hydrate dry, damaged hair and soothe an itchy scalp.

Three Types of DIY Manuka Honey Hair Masks

Here are 3 types of Manuka Honey hair masks that you can prepare at home.

1. Manuka Honey and Coconut Oil Hair Mask

This mask combines the moisturizing properties of Manuka honey with the nourishing effects of coconut oil.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup best Manuka honey
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

Instructions:

  • Mix equal parts of Manuka honey and coconut oil in a microwaveable bowl.
  • Microwave the mixture for 2-3 minutes until it becomes a runny paste.
  • Allow it to cool slightly, then apply generously to your hair, starting from the ends and working up to the scalp.
  • Leave on for 30-60 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water, then shampoo and condition as usual.

2. Manuka Honey, Avocado, and Olive Oil Hair Mask

When it comes to superfoods, Avocado is right up there among the best. It’s got plenty of healthy fat on top of vital nutrients. Add Olive Oil for some supreme moisturizing properties, and you’ve got a hair mask that will leave your hair feeling silky and smooth.

This nutrient-rich mask is perfect for deep conditioning and promoting silky smooth hair.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons best Manuka honey
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 ripe, soft Avocado

Instructions:

  1. Mash the avocado in a bowl.
  2. Add Manuka honey and olive oil, mixing until you achieve a consistent paste.
  3. Apply the mixture to your hair, focusing on the ends and working up to the scalp.
  4. Leave on for 1 hour.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner.

3. Manuka Honey and Egg Yolk Hair Mask

Egg yolks have been used as a home remedy for dry hair for years. This is because of the many nutrients egg contains. This includes everything from biotin and folate, as well as Vitamins A and E.

Mix this with Manuka Honey to make your hair shine and glow.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup high MGO Manuka honey
  • 1-2 egg yolks

Instructions:

  1. Whisk together Manuka honey and egg yolk (s) until smooth and creamy.
  2. Apply the mixture to your hair, ensuring even coverage from ends to scalp.
  3. Leave on for 30-60 minutes.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with cool water (to prevent the egg from cooking), then shampoo and condition as usual.

How to Choose the Best Manuka Honey for Hair Care

When selecting Manuka honey for your hair care routine, consider the following:

  1. Look for best-rated Manuka honey with a high MGO rating (ideally 250+ for hair care).
  2. Choose raw, unpasteurized honey to ensure all beneficial enzymes are intact.
  3. Verify that the honey is sourced from New Zealand, the home of authentic Manuka.
  4. Check for certifications from reputable organizations like the UMF Honey Association.

Top-rated Manuka honey brands like Kore New Zealand often provide detailed information about their MGO levels and sourcing practices, making it easier to choose a high-quality hair care product.

As you can see, it doesn’t matter if you want your hair to be shiny, smooth, or moisturized.

Using a Manuka Honey, along with a couple of ingredients, to create a hair mask can help you achieve the hair you’ve always wanted.

Remember to do this regularly. Many people do it once or twice and expect the effects to last. That’s not how it works.

Trust us. We are the “a lot of people”.
